You can always recycle household items for original and inexpensive -- or free! -- containers, such as cereal or appliance boxes.
An empty paper towel or toilet paper roll can make a unique gift container. Wrap the gift in some tissue paper, insert it into the roll, and wrap the roll with some beautiful paper, tying ribbon around each end. This is a great idea for jewelry or other small gift items.I remember as a child someone took a large TV box, filled the bottom with bricks (to give the feel of a heavy object inside), and tied some string across the inside where the small gift dangled. Very clever! Our family is known for giving deceptively wrapped gifts, and no one believes what's on the outside of the box anymore!
Of course, I really fooled them when I gave my niece some chocolate cereal as one of her gifts at Christmas. She told me that's what she wanted because her mom wouldn't buy it for her. It took quite a bit of convincing to get everyone to believe it really WAS cereal and not to have her open the box right then! :-)
